Types of Sand
Berks Soil & Stone offers both All-Purpose Sand and Concrete Sand to meet a variety of project needs. All-Purpose Sand is great for general use such as pool leveling, filling, and landscaping, while concrete sand is specifically graded for paver base and mixing with cement to create strong, stable concrete.
Concrete Sand

Because the grains are larger and jagged, they “lock” together when compacted. This makes it incredibly stable.
- Paver Base: This is the gold standard for the bedding layer under pavers. It won’t shift or “wash out” like finer sands.
- Mixing Concrete: When mixed with cement and stone, the angular edges provide the structural strength needed for footings and slabs.
- Drainage: If you are filling a trench or leveling an area where water runoff is a concern, concrete sand is the way to go.
Texture
Gritty, chunky, and angular
Grains
Varied sizes (up to 1/4 inch)
Drainage

Best For
Paver bases, mixing concrete, walkways
All Purpose Sand

Also know as Bar sand, All-Purpose Sand is screened and washed to remove all large pebbles and debris. It is designed for workability and a soft touch.
- Above-Ground Pools: This is the only sand you should use under a pool liner.5 Since it has no pebbles, it won’t puncture the vinyl.
- Masonry & Mortar: Its fine texture allows it to mix into a smooth “buttery” mortar that is easy for masons to spread between bricks or stones.
- Play Areas: Because it’s soft and clean, it’s the preferred choice for sandboxes and volleyball courts.
- Joint Sand: It can be swept into the small cracks between bricks or stones for a clean, finished look.
Texture
Silky, smooth, and fine-grained
Grains
Uniform, small, washed grains
Drainage
Moderate; packs tightly
Best For
Pool liners, mortar, sandboxes, joints
